When Faber Drive decided to submit a song to Vancouver radio station 99.3 The Fox's battle of the bands last year, their goal wasn't to win the contest. They weren't even sure they were good enough to enter. In fact, when frontman Faber brought his band's CD to the station on the deadline day for submissions, he came close to giving up and going back home.

'I actually got back in my car and pulled away,' he says. 'Then I decided to go back, so I turned the car around and I got up in the office just before it closed and handed in the disc.'

It was the best move of the band's career. The station chose the song, 'Sex and Love,' as one of the 20 best submissions out of more than 500, then played the song on the radio in a head to head contest against the other qualifiers. Soon, Faber Drive (then called simply Faber) were in the top 10, and, after live competitions at local clubs, they won 1st place and were voted the best band in Vancouver.

It's easy to see why. 'Sex and Love' is the kind of song that's equally enthralling whether blasting from car speakers, an iPod, a home stereo or a concert PA. A sinuous blend of bobbing basslines, passionate singing and 'ba-ba-baaa' background vocals, the cut is pretty representative of the rest of Faber Drive's debut album 'SEVEN SECOND SURGERY' (Universal Republic Records).

Wake Up Your Seatmate started out as four girls wanting to make something they all had a passion for - MUSIC. Armed with two guitars and drums, the band first conquered their friends' backyards before landing their first big gig - the annual high school fair.

Upon graduation from high school, the girls decided to pursue the band seriously, balancing college work with band practices. After adding a bass player to further improve their sound, they did the rounds among Manila's hottest clubs and bars, gaining a loyal cult following along the way.

In October of 2006, they released their self - titled debut cd under Raven7 Multimedia. With two successful singles under its belt, the band started to gain more attention in Manila's rock music scene. And for the girls of Wake Up Your Seatmate, this was just the beginning of a whirlwind adventure they're more than ready and willing to embark!

How it all started: “For Christmas when we were kids, ironically Dia got the guitar and I got the karaoke machine. We quickly learned, however, what we were natural at and destined to become. She became really focused on her voice and began singing little country ditties at local county fairs and retirement centers. I started out playing whatever was on the radio or whatever happened to be in my buddies' CD player. My dad was a DJ in his early twenties so he had quite an extensive record collection that I listened to occasionally. After I experienced my first heartbreak and I thought the world was going to end, the natural way to console my tattered heart was to write a song. Of course my parents, being the supportive and loving caretakers they are, showered me with much undeserved praise and encouraged me to keep writing. My sister and I heeded their advice and began writing and playing original songs together." – Meg

My Chemical Romance (often shortened to MCR or My Chem[1]) is an American Music Award-nominated, Grammy Award-nominated, American rock quintet that formed in 2001. Secondhand Serenade

Much like Five for Fighting or Dashboard Confessional both musically and in theory, Secondhand Serenade is a project name for a solo artist, singer/songwriter John Vesely. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in a musical family that included his professional jazz musician father, Vesely spent a number of dues-paying years in a variety of local bands before switching from bass to acoustic guitar and beginning to write his own songs. (In his official artist bio, Vesely claims that the inspiration for the band name Secondhand Serenade is the fact that all of his autobiographical songs are directed first and foremost to his wife, thereby making the audience mere bystanders to their pas de deux; he seems not to notice that some potential listeners might find this attitude a bit condescending.) Vesely recorded his debut album, Awake, in 2005, originally self-releasing the disc and selling it through his MySpace page and iTunes. Online buzz led to a deal with Glassnote Records, a pseudo-indie funded and distributed by the Warner Bros. offshoot The Independent Label Group. Fall Out Boys

The four members of Chicago's Fall Out Boy came together in suburban Wilmette around 2001. Vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz, drummer Andrew Hurley, and guitarist Joe Trohman had all been in and out of various units connected to Chicago's underground hardcore scene. Most notably, Hurley drummed for Racetraitor, the furiously political metalcore outfit whose brief output was both a rallying point and sticking point within the hardcore community. As Fall Out Boy, the quartet used the unbridled intensity of hardcore as a foundation for melody-drenched pop-punk with a heavy debt to the emo scene. They debuted with a self-released demo in 2001, following it up in May 2002 with a split LP on Uprising that also featured Project Rocket (for which Hurley also drummed). The band returned on the label in January with the mini-LP Fall Out Boy's Evening Out with Your Girl, but by this point a bidding war of sorts was already in full swing.

Plain White T's lead vocalist Tom Higgenson originally set out to be a drummer in high school and was a member of various bands. However, when Plain White T's first came together in the late 90's Higgenson took over songwriting and singing duties for the band. Bassist Ken Fletcher and drummer Dave Tirio came on board and the band began performing around the Chicago area.

The T's were just an average starting out rock band, playing covers in a garage. They spent a few years doing this, but in the summer of 1999 Tom Higgenson was in a car crash, which left him with a lacerated kidney and punctured lung. The band had only just started to get noticed by record labels at this point, but this made no difference as far as Atlantic was concerned, as the band got signed to this indie label in 2000. They recorded an album and released it, its name was Come on Over. They supported tours around their hometown, Chicago, aiming only to gain their fan base.

Guitars

Playing guitars is one of the things that many people wish that they could do. There are a bevy of different reasons for this, but a few of them are explained in the following paragraphs.

• It’s fun ? One of the main reasons why people seek to learn how to play these instruments is simply because they are fun to play. Think about it. If you have ever been at a campground and someone else has whipped out a guitar and started singing, it is pretty likely that you at least listened and maybe even started singing along yourself.
Likewise, if you already know how to play the guitar, if you have ever taken one out and started playing at a social function, you know how it can liven up a party and loosen up a crowd. There is just something about these instruments that helps people come out of their shells.

• Girls (or guys) love it ? If you are trying to impress a member of the opposite sex, there is perhaps no better way to do so than by practicing a song and then surprising then when you play it on the guitar and sing for them. Not only is it nice for them to listen to such a song, but also it makes them feel good that you have practiced just for them.

• You can be in a band ? Even if you don’t have aspirations of being a famous musician, that doesn’t mean that you cannot play in a band every once in a while. Maybe you will play at some local events here and there or maybe you will only play in your garage. It doesn’t matter where you play or what you play as much as it matters that you are playing at all.
In addition to these reasons, there are many other reasons that people have for wanting to know how to play guitars.

Electric guitars

Ask anybody what the first word that comes to their head is when they think of electric guitars and the consensus response that you will probably get is “loud.”
Despite their reputation as being loud and annoying, there are many good uses for these guitars and the fact is that in many ways they are not all that different from normal guitars.

Of course, there are going to be some differences, especially with the different types of guitars. Take for example bass electric guitars. These types of guitars are important for underscoring the melody in many songs, but few of those who do not own guitars know that these kinds of guitars actually have less strings than other types of guitars. Because bass guitars are a little more limited in their scope, some consider them to be a bit easier for beginners to pick up.

Another difference is the amount of sound the instrument amplifies. If you are really strumming a way on your acoustic guitar, chances are it can get kind of loud, but not so loud that anybody would really be bothered by it. Too bad the same cannot be said for electric guitars. These instruments are hooked into amplifiers when they are played and if you really start strumming along and have the amplifier turned up, there is a good chance that you might have some angry neighbors.

Still, despite these obvious differences, there are definitely some similarities as well. One of the biggest similarities is the fact that toy essentially play an acoustic guitar and a standard electric guitar the same way. You grip it the same and you place your fingers the same way to play chords. The one different thing that you do is that you typically strum a lot softer on an electric guitar to make the same sound from a typical guitar.

Acoustic guitars

It is a fact that musicians are often considered artists, but what about those who build instruments like acoustic guitars? Are they artists as well. According to many people who know a thing or two about guitars, the answer is a resounding yes.
The process that a person who builds guitars must go through is a complicated process that takes much patience and inspiration, just like an artist. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither was a quality guitar.

Although there are certainly many major guitar makers that stockpile materials and put these guitars together on a regular basis, there are many others who choose to take the slower route because it brings a little extra satisfaction and personal fulfillment.
For those who build their own guitars, the first step and the most important step is to choose the proper kind of wood. When a wood is chosen, there are a few different features of this wood that are looked into. One of these features is the quality of wood.

When quality is mentioned, basically what this means is making sure that it is a wood that is solid and will not split easily. While any wooden guitar could break if you are not careful, the properly constructed guitars need to be in good shape and should be able to stand up to any kind of small bump or scratch that comes their way.

Another aspect of the wood that needs to be carefully looked over is the texture of the wood. Those who construct these guitars will often feel the wood before they begin to build the guitar. If the wood is rough, it is rarely used because it can be difficult to smooth over the guitar after it has already been built. Many guitar builders choose to make sure that the wood is already smooth before they start.

Another thing that is closely considered is the color of the wood. Sometimes a finish can be applied to the wood after the guitar is constructed while at other times people prefer to make sure that it has been taken care of before the guitar is actually put together.

There are many different things to consider when building acoustic guitars, but perhaps the most important thing to remember is that every guitar builder is an artist and that each guitar is a work of art.

Bass guitars

Bass guitars are one of the kinds of guitars that are very prevalent, yet still very few people know much about how to play them or how they are different from the more standard guitars.
So, in order to help educate, let’s go through a few of the interesting facts about these fun, yet misunderstood guitars.

• They are a little different ? If you know much about guitars, you have probably noticed that they usually include five strings. These strings make a combination of different chords depending on finger placement.

If you look closely at a bass guitar, you will see that bass guitars actually do not have as many strings. Actually, these guitars normally have only four strings. These instruments do not need as many strings as a normal guitar simply because they do not serve the same purpose. Whereas it is the purpose of a normal guitar to provide a melody, it is the responsibility of the person playing the bass to provide the bassline for the song.

• Not heavy, just big-boned ? However you want to say it, bass guitars might have a weight problem. The problem, of course, depends on if you are strong enough to lift and play it. Those who have held or played an acoustic guitar know that they are really fairly light, especially since they are mostly hollowed out.

But the same is not true for the basses. These instruments are often quite heavy because not only are they musical instruments, but also sophisticated pieces of machinery. If you plan on playing the bass for any length of time at all, you should be prepared to do a little heavy lifting. At worst, it might make you a little sore, but at best it will make you stronger.
So, although bass guitars are different, they are not so different that a person who typically plays an acoustic guitar wouldn’t know how to play one.

Guitar strings

Everybody knows that you cannot play a guitar without strings, but not everyone knows how absolutely important it is to be able to take care of these strings to ensure they are in good, playable shape.

If you play the guitar often, you can not only hear it, but also feel it when there is something wrong with the guitar strings. They might feel slack or shredded or have difficulty staying in tune.

Proper care of guitar strings includes protecting the instrument from extreme temperatures. This protects the wood in the body as well. Replace them ? If the strings feel like they are not in good shape to you, chances are that they aren’t in good shape. Don’t hesitate to replace them if you think it will help.

By just doing a few extra things to take care of your guitar strings, you will soon come to realize that doing this will likely improve your playing.

Guitar parts

When you think of guitar parts, it is likely that the first part you think of is the string. As a matter of fact, for many people, this is the only kind of guitar part that they are able to think of. Even though these parts are very important, they are not more important than any of the other parts that are included.

• Strings ? Of course these are important parts to the guitar. The reason that strings are so important is obvious ? the sound that produced from them is what makes a guitar an instrument.

Remember that if you want to have good sound, not just any old strings will do. The strings range from thick to thin and they produce different sounds depending on how hard you stroke them. Of course, another way that sound can be altered is by tightening the strings up.• Pegs ? These guitar parts play a large role in determining the kind of sound and the quality of sound that will come from your computer. This sound can be affected by simply making a small rotation with the tightener. The way you turn it greatly affects the sound of the guitar. These are the items that you use to tune the guitar to make sure that it is in good, playable condition
There are other guitar parts as well, but regardless of the part, the important thing to remember is that each part affects how another part works.

Guitar picks

Perhaps no part of playing the guitar is more angst-ridden than choosing a guitar pick. For some reason, people seem to get very upset with these picks. But some people love to use picks. It all boils down to the fact that for some people, picks are comfortable while for others they are not.
Here are common arguments for and against using guitar picks:

• For ? One thing that playing a guitar does to you than non-musicians might not know is that it can truly be hard on your fingers. That’s right. It hurts. Those who play with picks protect their fingers from becoming calloused from strumming on the guitar for hours at a time.
If you want a simple black pick, then it is simple to find this at any music supply store. But, if you want a pick that has your name on one side and the name of your band, along with your logo, on the other side, you can custom order it. Expect to pay a little more if you plan to get one designed just for you.

• Against ? One of the biggest reasons some people do not like to use picks is simply because they do not get the same kind of feel when your finger touches a string. The way a person strums their guitar can have a significant affect on the mood of a song. Some people feel if they are unable to use all of their fingers to stroke the strings, they are not going to be able to convey the sense of emotion through their music.

Blues guitars

Blues guitar is a style of playing based on specific chords and feelings of despair and sadness. Blues guitar isn’t a specific instrument, though some guitar bodies are better-suited for blues playing than others.

There have been many great guitarists who specialize in playing the blues. Perhaps the recent greatest and certainly one of the most popular is B.B. King. There are a few reasons why B.B. King is considered to be such a great guitarist. If it is your plan to be able to truly play the blues, perhaps you should try to learn from his example. Here are some of the things B.B. would pay attention to:

• Feel it ? When King plays the guitar, he doesn’t just play it, he feels it in his soul. And because he feels it himself, he is able to help others feel it as well. This is one of the signs of a great blues guitarist. You have to make your audience feel what you feel.• Practice ? You can feel it all you want, but it is still absolutely necessary to practice a lot if you are truly interested in being able play the guitar with the best of them. The great guitarists didn’t get that way overnight. Their achievements required lots and lots of practice and hard work. If you want to be great, you will need to commit yourself to the same. Learn all the rules and technique before you can abandon them.

Guitar amps

If you have an electric guitar, it is a given that you are going to need some guitar amps. ‘Amps’ is short for ‘amplifiers’ – electronics and tubes that bring life to that electric guitar.

Guitar amps are as varied and personal as the actual guitars. You have to hear the sounds produced by any given amp before you know if it will suit your purpose. That’s why music stores are sometimes irritating – just one guitar player plugged in to an amp in a music store creates quite a ruckus. But with so many different kinds of amps available, you have to try before you buy.

Rock ‘n roll would be nothing without guitar amps. From the dry, classic sound of Elvis’ guitar to the signature snarl of Black Sabbath guitars, most of any recognizable guitar sound is produced from the amp. Amps are equipped with a variety of knobs used to adjust high, low, and mid-range electric sounds.
